Photographer #2

Andy Farrer

Andy Farrer is a landscape photographer and the aspect he seems to focus on is seasons and this is made obvious as within his portfolios they are named after each season. I have chosen this photographer as I am interested in his aspect of seasons, and it is quite broad. Within my imagination I can see you can create photographs with what could be associated with the season , therefore broadening to objects, the weather, the setting, etc. I also picked this photographer because I love his use of colour when photographing the season.

This image is from Farrers spring portfolio, thus the aspect being spring. The aspect is made obvious through the use of bright yellow of the flowers in the setting as it suggests they are blooming. I think photographing a yellow flower to represent spring was very wise, as the flowers resemble daffodils, a traditional spring flower. A wide angle lens has been used in this photograph displaying the mass of flowers and depth of the field. The blue sky with patches of clouds in it enforces the idea of spring as it is not quite beaming with sun through the sky, and the cods suggest it is a bit colder.

This image has influenced me to in fact almost copy this idea by doing a shoot of flowers to portray the season of spring. By choosing an open flower or an almost open flower (preparing for bloom) I feel the audience would automatically figure out that this was a shoot on spring flowers. I also am influenced by the idea of colour to portray an aspect of a season, the use of bright colours in this image suggests it is a spring/summer weather, therefore conveys the aspect well.

This image is from Farrers summer portfolio, thus the aspect being summer. The aspect is very clear in this image due to the setting of the picture which shows clear white sand (which is clearly from another country however is stereotypically with a sunny summery place). Also in contrast to his sprig portfolio (meaning the image I have posted above) the sky is a clear blue and lacks clouds, creating a distinction in his work between the two seasons. This image seems to have been zoomed in , but in this image what I love most is the use of only two colours but the defining separation of them as the sand hits the sky, I think this is very eye-catching. I like how there is not much going on in this image and it doesn't appear to busy but actually comes across as quite calming.

This image has influenced me to consider narrowing down colours as it doesn't need to be overflowing with bright colours in order to portray my aspect. This image has also influenced me to take a simple image instead of always taking pictures which are very busy, the use of this calm image also enforces the aspect of summer because summers are associated with holidays and holidays are meant to be calm and relaxing.

This image is from Farrers autumn portfolio, thus the aspect being autumn. In this photo the aspect is identifiable due to the colours of the leaves on the tree, they are a dark warm red which is the colour the leaves turn orange-red. The sunrise/sunset puts light on the grass, which looks like it has dew on it which suggests a cold night and the sun coming up warm it. This sort of image reminds me of everything autumn, when the fire gets turned on for the first time since winter, a bitter wind, the crunching of leaves beneath your feet.

This image influences me to create images that can create emotion or create a memory, I think this is very hard to do within photography however is not impossible. This image has also influenced me to consider what gets in the photograph and what doesn't, as it is very important as a small little thing can contribute to the aspect of the landscape, for example in this image the small sunrise which creates lighting which shows the dew on the grass.

This image is from Farrers winter portfolio, meaning that the aspect of this landscape is winter. The key colour which represents the aspect of winter in this image is white as it is the colour snow, which is pretty much the first thing people think of when they think of winter. In this image there is a dusting of snow on a beach which creates a juxtaposition as a beach is usually represented to be sunny and a summer destination, therefore I think this thought track makes the picture really interesting. I love in this image how the snow mixes into the water create a white that gradually disappears as the sea continues.

This image influences me to use juxtaposition within my photography and perhaps even using this for an aspect within a shoot. I think this would be really interesting as there is so much you could do, especially using the field of seasons. This image has influenced me to also use colours to create a represent a feeling for a photo, for example in this image the dull dark colours makes you feel cold.

Overall I really like this photographer as I love his use of the aspect of seasons, I think it is very original and I would really love to create work like his. However I am limited because I will only experience rain and sun tom now on, I will not get the pleasure of creating the aspects on winter and autumn. I really appreciate that this photographer hasn't used techniques as it keeps his work natural which I think is imperative when shooting something like seasons, something that is a natural change 4 times annually.
